Arthritis Support Network launched: 2018

Arthritis Support Network Leader: Jennifer      Type of Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis

Arthritis Support Network Leader: Lisa            Type of Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis. Fibromyalgia

About this Arthritis Support Network:

Our vision for this group is to provide a safe place for adults to come together and share their experiences, struggles and successes as well as learn more about arthritis and rheumatic conditions. That it is a safe, caring place where people can come to talk, learn, socialize and find support. Many people do not tell others about their condition and this is a place they can safely talk. Our hope is that this group will provide support, community and friendship to those living with arthritis and rheumatic conditions.

About: Jennifer

Hello! My name is Jennifer. I am a forty-something year old and have had Rheumatoid Arthritis for a little over a year. As many of you have, I struggled with my new diagnosis and learning what it meant for me. Over the past year I have learned to embrace my life with RA and move forward to continue doing all the things I love to do.

I grew up in Minneapolis but have lived in the DC area for over 10 years now, but I still consider MN home. I work full time, travel frequently and enjoy spending time with my niece and nephew who live very close to me. In many of my jobs I've been involved in training and mentoring new hires which I do enjoy doing. Shortly after I was diagnosed with RA and struggled to find a support group to learn more about what RA meant for me, a family member suggested I start a group telling me "You would be great at it!" I just laughed but didn't think about it seriously. Well now a year later, here I am getting involved!

I decided to start an Arthritis Support Network and become a Leader because I have searched for a support group in my area for a long time and I have yet to find one. I am so excited to jump at the chance to create and run one because I know that there is a great need for a support group in my area and all the benefits that people will get by participating in one.

About: Lisa

I was diagnosed with RA in Aug 1996 and Fibro a few years later. I grew up in South Florida and moved to Houston TX where I supported the Space Shuttle program for 30 years. Since moving to DC I have become a volunteer/docent at the Air & Space Museum. At the age of 60, I discovered horses and now own one.

I am  joining Jennifer in leading this ASN because I searched for a long time for a local support group without much success. The couple meetings I have been to her in DC have been wonderfl and I would like to help Jennifer with them. Hopefully we will become large enough to split into two groups!

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!  I was diagnosed with RA just over two years ago. Like you, I looked and looked for a support group — however, unlike you I did not take on the challenge to start the group myself!!

I’m still struggling to find medication that works for my RA. A few weeks ago I started Retuximade and I’m hopeful this will be the one!!!  But I’m very excited for the opportunity to talk to other local RA folks and share ideas about what works and what doesn’t!!

Thanks so much for starting this group!  I look forward to meeting you and other members!!!

So glad to get the email about this group starting!  I've really hoped someone would have the energy to get something going.  I live in Frederick, MD and have had RA for about 13 years and would love to connect with others in the area!  I'm lucky enough to be going to Mexico on Feb 3 but hoping to make some of the future meetings.  I'd love to have a FB group of DC, MD, VA warriors!  Thanks so much for doing this!

31 year old mother of 2 with Psoriatic arthritis. Diagnosed 8 years ago. As an athlete and general human being, arthritis is mentally daunting. I'd be lying to you if I said, "it gets better." But if I've learned anything over the last almost decade its that your mind is both an unlimited asset and your greatest challenge to hurdle. I've tried all the meds, diets and exercise routines but the best cure out there is your own positive will power to keep moving, forgive your body and accept the love and support of your family. Don't beat yourself up when you feel like sh!t, can't do the things you once knew yourself to be capable of and just feel like breaking down and crying. 8 years later and i still feel this way semi - regularly. Its so easy to lose sight of the struggle and call yourself lazy or worthless. But don't. You are amazing and fighting a battle many people could never understand. You are stronger than you know, even if it's not at the gym. Much love to all you crunchy guys and gals. Fight the good fight - Every. Friggin. Day. Jennifer thank you for leading this group. It will be a great resource to all. <3

I am 27 years old and I was diagnosed with arthritis when I was 17.  I also have tight muscles because I was born with CHARGE syndrome.  I have done the Jingle Bell Run and I plan on doing the Arthritis walk in a few days.  I am a licensed veterinary technician and I work at Petco.  I keep myself moving by going to yoga and zumba classes.
