About: Lindsay

I am a graphic designer living in St. Joseph, Missouri. I have lived with polyarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis for over half of my life, with a diagnosis at age 16. In my 30s, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic bursitis, and osteoarthritis in addition to my original diagnosis.

Years of coping with chronic pain and stiffness led me to yoga, exercise, and meditation. I have been able to maintain function of my body through these techniques in combination with medical intervention.

I enjoy baking and decorating cakes for my family's special occasions, spoiling my nephew and nieces, and reading.

I first got involved with the Arthritis Foundation when my mother worked for our local rheumatologist's office. In fact, I attended JA events before I was ever diagnosed because my mother was working at these events. In adulthood, I participated in the Walk to Cure Arthritis and am now on the local committee. In 2015, I joined the Kansas City Young Adult Committee, where the general consensus was that we need some type of support group geared towards young adults. I chaired the committee in 2016. I have volunteered for several local events including the Walk to Cure Arthritis, Art for Arthritis, a Young Adult Committee fundraiser, and Jingle Bell Run. In May 2017, I was the local Adult Honoree in the Walk to Cure Arthritis.

I began volunteering on the steering committee for Arthritis United in 2017. That was the first time I participated in a national event for the Arthritis Foundation and my first interaction with the Live Yes! Connect Group. It was incredibly gratifying, motivating, and inspirational to walk into a ballroom full of other people like me, working towards the same goals and understanding each other. I left the conference with a ton of new information about my illness, healthcare, other rheumatic diseases, and my legal rights. I also left with about 55 new social media contacts, the desire to get involved in a more meaningful way, and the understanding that anybody could become a leader in some way. I am excited to play a role in bringing this type of enrichment to northwest Missouri.
