About this Live Yes! Connect Group:
My vision for the Arthritis Support Network is to cultivate a welcoming environment, this includes but not limited to, a safe place for communication, emotional release, and that provides confidentiality. I want to foster strength, growth, wellness, connections, education, advocacy, and empowerment to those Warriors living with Arthritis or other Rheumatic diseases and their families.
Hello, my name is Melita Quick. I am 42 years old. I went to Western Carolina University. I have B.S. in Child Development and Family Relations. I have a M.S. in Counseling. I was working on my Ph.D in Social and Community Services. As I was finishing my dissertation life happened and interrupted my progress. So, due to life situations I have been unable to finish my dissertation.
My Arthritis journey began in 2001 at the age of 25 years old. I woke up one morning to the most excruciating pain that I've ever experienced in my life. I couldn't move anything on my body, from head to toe, therefore making me believe I was paralyzed. I was immediately taken to the emergency room where labs and tests were completed. Not knowing what was happening to me, I was told that I may have Muscular Sclerosis, Lupus, or Rheumatoid Arthritis. After leaving the hospital, within an hour, I received a telephone call saying Ms. Quick we believe you have Rheumatoid Arthritis and we're going to refer you to a rheumatologist. My entire life was changed in that one single moment.
So, since my diagnosis I've had multiple surgeries. I've had bilateral total knee replacement and a partial knee replacement. I've had bilateral surgeries on my fingers, and a neck surgery (and I'm due to have another neck surgery). I've also had two other surgeries on my right knee prior to the replacements. I've encountered several doctors and a host of medications to try.
Some people have spoken of remission. Although I have not experienced remission yet I believe that my time is coming!!
I am "medically retired" and looking forward to getting involved and working with my Arthritis Warriors!!!.
I am facilitating a group in my area because in 2017 I discovered that there wasn’t a support group in Greensboro, nor in the state of North Carolina. I was intrigued by the fact that the Arthritis Foundation didn’t have a support group in the area. This prompted me to learn more about the possibility of starting a group in the Greensboro area. As of now, the closest one is almost two hours away. I believe that people in this area could benefit from a group closer to them.
