Live Yes! Connect Facilitator: Keyara Type of Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis
About this Live Yes! Connect Group:
My vision for this support group is to foster an environment for those who live with any kind of debilitating arthritis to come and feel supported. I want to build new relationships with those who can understand what we go through. I want to raise awareness throughout the community about the different kinds of arthritis and the effects it has on those who live with it. I also want to plan events that will raise funds for the cure and treatment of Arthritis, and create a social involvement with one another.
My name is Keyara Kimbrough—I am 30-something years old. I have two children: a son and a daughter. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of 26, about two months after I gave birth to my daughter. Since being diagnosed, my life has taken a serious change. I have been on several medications, which had crazy side effects. I have had both of my knees totally replaced. Also, I have been on disability since 2015, and out of work since 2014. Needless to say, it hasn't been easy (as everyone knows). I have had to make some involuntary changes. For example, having to remember to take medicine every day and coping with chronic pain. It was when I had to learn to cope with this situation, that I decided that I want to be a help to people who are going through similar situations. Through this illness, I have learned to have empathy for those going through the same pain. Nobody knows what we go through, but us.
I am facilitating this group in my area because: we do not have one in this area, because I would like our community to be involved in the fight for a cure, and to create an environment where those who have this illness feel understood and included.
