About: Douglas

I am extremely excited to be the facilitator of this Live Yes! Connect group in the Rio Grande Valley. Although I have only recently been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, I discovered that I have been managing the effects of RA for quite some time. When trying to find out information and support, I discovered that there was great opportunities through the Arthritis Foundation. Believing in both the mission of the Arthritis Foundation and in developing a strong local community of support for those living in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

I have been a lifelong learner working in Higher education for over 30 years. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology from Northland College in Ashland, WI, my Masters in Community Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Superior and my Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi. The bulk of my experience was working with residence halls, food services and other Auxiliary services. I gained a lot of experience over the years in creating caring, inclusive and supportive communities.

I have long enjoyed being involved with my community and in many of them i have been honored to have served in leadership roles. I find it exciting to get to know people in my community and to work together to improve quality of life for everyone!

I have been a member of this community since 2006 having moved from Wisconsin with my wife of 30 years, Eileen. I currently work at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as an Associate Dean of Students and enjoy assisting students as they pursue their education.

I look forward to making this journey with my co-leader and other members of this community as we grow together!

When I was first diagnosed, I was scared and in shock. I could find a lot of valuable information on line, but I found I needed someone to reach out to so that I could talk about my fears, ask my questions and learn from personal experiences what it is like living with this disease. I was fortunate that I found a friend who was able to talk to me and calm my nerves. In that moment I realized just how important having this resource in our communities would be for people coping with the daily reality of living with this disease.

I wanted to volunteer to be a leader for our group because I believe in the power that a community of support can provide to its members. More importantly I realized just how important it is for those newly diagnosed, and even those who have been diagnosed for a long time, to have a place to turn to find acceptance and understanding.
