Live Yes! Connect Facilitator: Shannon Type of Arthritis: Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
About this Live Yes! Connect Group:
My vision for this group is to provide a safe, comfortable place for those with Arthritis and any other similar rheumatic disease in the Palm Springs area, where they can build relationships with those similar to them through organized meetings and activities. They will gain knowledge of how to try and control their disease and live life to the fullest capability possible. Rheumatic diseases are silent, misunderstood diseases that make it difficult for non Warriors to understand. This group will give Warriors a place to build confidence, self-esteem, and knowledge while gaining friendships with others like themselves.
My name is Shannon and I have recently moved to Indio from the Los Angeles area. I lived in the Pacific Northwest until about seven years ago. I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis about 35 years ago, at about the age of 10. As a child, I was in and out of numerous doctors’ offices trying to understand and find ways to control my arthritis. I have experimented with many different drug regimens and I have received three joint replacements. My pain has been controlled fairly well these last few years, however, severe deformity has made its presence. I have remained very active both throughout my childhood and adulthood. As a child, I tried to participate in sports but ended up leaning towards performing arts which I still love today. As an adult, I worked for many years in retail and then switched gears to become a substitute teacher. I am currently working as a part-time substitute teacher. I also play "nanny' to my four nieces and nephews by helping out my sister whenever she needs it. The Arthritis Foundation has been a part of my life for about four years. I have been a volunteer helping to coordinate the various walks that take place throughout the year, as well as participate in them. Just recently I applied for the Big Brother/Big Sister program and I am anxiously waiting to be placed with a "Little Sister", a program that I participated in many years ago as well. I am looking forward to traveling, meeting new people, and exploring my new home territory.
I would like to start a group In the Greater Palm Springs area because I was a member of a group in Los Angeles and it helped me gain strength and confidence in dealing with my disease. I also gained friendships and became more active thanks to the group. I learned a lot about my disease and ways to deal with it by hearing others' stories. I am hoping that my group will encourage those Arthritis & Rheumatic Warriors in the Palm Springs area to come forward and take back their lives! ( or at least enjoy life and live it to the fullest).
