About this Arthritis Support Network:
Our vision for this support group is to provide a supportive community for individuals that are coping with arthritis and rheumatic diseases. Our intent is that the individuals in the group will share resources and generally minimize the negative emotional impact of the experience. We both want to make it fun and informative as well as supportive for anyone with arthritis related conditions or who know someone with arthritis related conditions.
I have avascular necrosis, psoriatic arthritis, sjögren's, and hypermobility. I have had 3 joint replacements by the time I was 35. I live in Decatur, GA with my husband of 17 years and my 6 year old son Mick. I take a lot of meds, have an IV Remicade treatment every 4 weeks, and I just take it day by day. I have 2 blogs and a blog talk radio show about chronic pain, being a mom and belly dancing. I love belly dancing. I dance with a local troupe of older women who have been dancing for years. I am one of the babies of the group at 42 years old. We perform and educate at schools and retirement homes, etc. I have my BSN and worked as a Diabetes Nurse Educator until I had to stop working after my first hip replacement in 2003. I want to be a group leader because we need a support group in our area. It's that simple. I feel like I have the ability to provide that to people in our community.
I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 3 in an era where they didn't know much about the disease. In fact, the treatment was probably as bad as the disease itself. While I definitely have physical repercussions, I have found that the emotional impact was a little sneakier and trickier to manage. My personal passion is for sharing my coping strategies with others so that they might benefit from my experiences. I have been very fortunate living with the disease all these years and managed to complete college, graduate school and twenty plus years in corporate America! I think that's quite a survival story, personally.
I have lived in Atlanta for about six years. This is the ninth state that I have lived in and I was also an exchange student growing up. So, I've been around a little! Having lived so many places has taught me the importance of having a support community. It has helped me cope with my Arthritis and also helped me to enjoy day-to-day life as well. I would like to help foster that sense of community for those impacted by this family of diseases.
